Many people have dreams, ambitions,or goals but do not know how to go about achieving them.
They may have thought about self improvement and what their ideal life would consist of, but have no idea how to even begin to make the plans and take the actions required to make this a reality.
How can one tell if a person is willing to work on self improvement? Some people have merely a vague idea about how to begin “improving”. These are the folks who believe that if only they had a better job, or met the love of their life, or had been given better opportunities, and so on, everything would be fine and they would be happy.
They believe that their happiness or lack of it is decided by external factors; thus their thoughts and actions are deemed to be of little consequence. Some believe that if only they had more money they could have whatever they want and be on their way to self improvement. I call these people “materialist self improvers.”
Sadly, most people have spent little time thinking about what they actually want from life. Most of us just trudge through our daily routines and work, without thinking of the possibilities for change. Others briefly consider changes, but do not believe there is anything they can do to create their vague version of utopia#apart from buying more lottery tickets.
People who fail to reflect on these matters often do not know what they actually want from their lives, and may even have little idea what would genuinely make them happy. They seem to just drift from day to day, week to week, and year to year, doing little more than just getting by.
They may have what they believe to be a secure job and earn enough to live a relatively comfortable life. They seem happy enough and have no great ambition to achieve anything more from life. But there is more, much more.
How important is self improvement?
Throughout our lives we are constantly growing and developing. Circumstances make us grow and develop, even if we fail to make the conscious decision to do so. Before a certain age, we learn through formal education institutions and we continue to learn through our experiences for the rest of our lives. We all go through general self improvement just in dealing with life’s ups and downs.
Today’s world moves at a much faster pace than at any time in history. For anyone living in modern society there are more opportunities to structure our lives than ever. But that can also create confusion and hesitation.
There is also greater competition today, and ever-changing technology means that there are few “jobs for life” anymore. It is now normal not only to change jobs frequently throughout our working lives, but even to change careers or industries entirely. Because the modern workplace is so competitive, people who are ambitious and hungry for success know they need to learn new skills and knowledge to keep ahead of colleagues. To attain this, they must add self improvement to the list of tasks.
I like to call these people “reflective actors” meaning that they not only reflect on their desires, but they choose to act on them. They are the people that are most likely to progress within their chosen field, and will be most readily employable in different organizations or industries.
An individual’s commitment to self improvement and personal growth may well be the deciding factor in how his or her future plays out. We will be covering this topic in several upcoming articles, and hope to offer guidance to those who are taking the first steps toward self-improvement.

Life Coach Advice
If you think success, success will happen. It sounds like magic, success thinking, but that is exactly how it works! Before anything is realized in our lives, it is preceded by a thought. If you want shoes, you first have to think shoes. If you want to eat, you first think food. Without the thought, no action is taken and nothing is realized. In life, if you want success, you have to learn how to think successfully.
If at some point you have the thought to change a certain area of your life, deciding to create change is just the first step to making a transformation. Falling into the same approach to change that failed in the past will only lead to the same result. In order to get new results you have to change your mental patterns. Learn how to use success thinking and you will create the life you want.
It is said, “We become what we think.” In other words, we are shaped by our thoughts. When you were born, your brain contained over 100 billion cells. Imagine that! Granted, these cells had yet to develop any real circuit connectivity.
Over time, you developed synopses that became the road map to your thoughts resulting from environmental exposure. Everything you have seen and experienced has shaped and defined the patterns of your thoughts. These thoughts drive the engine of your actions.
Learning takes place in the region of the brain called the cerebral cortex. When we are actively learning we are consciously concentrating. Once we have an activity fully understood, our learning passes from the conscious to the unconscious. Think back to when you learned to tie your shoelaces, drive a car, or brush your teeth. These activities once required a great deal of our focus and concentration yet now we are able to perform them with very little or often no thought at all.
Think of all the activities you do without thought. Think about your breathing, your heart, your arms moving, walking. The “automatic brain” performs much of what we do.
Your brain develops automatic activity from every single experience, thought and emotion. The words you speak to yourself will determine your brain patterns. You need to once again become conscious and take an active role in your life.
When we fail, we fail largely because of our own self-limiting thoughts and partly because of our desire to make changes in our circumstances without changing our thinking. There are no magic bullets or magic answer that will solve your situations. There are no magic diets, magic exercise machines or get-rich-quick programs.
Success requires a shift in thinking. Success is not limited to a few arbitrary individuals. Success is only limited to those who learn how to think positively with the genuine belief in their ability to achieve. This means you have to change the way you talk to yourself.
Get actively involved in changing how you are thinking. Take a new mental approach and you will find your life changing as a result. The way to achieve a change in your thinking patterns is to use empowering affirmations. The words you speak are the ideas with which you train yourself and those around you to accept.
The only limitations on your life are the limitations you place on your life by how you think. In Tools-To-Life, the approach to changing your thinking is called “correctional thinking.” This method allows you to substantiate how you should think to achieve your goals. The result is success thinking that actualizes your ability to re-create your life and make it what you want it to be.

This is when self-improvement will help you out. You should know how to appreciate your job if you want to succeed in life and self-improvement can secure your job future.
If you are always late arriving for your job, it could become the reason for your losing it. Why don’t you try to wake up early or if you’re always experiencing traffic delays, try to find another route. Self-improvement of your habits will help you succeed and can secure your job future.
There might be criticism leveled against you that isn’t just. There could be too much politics or backstabbing, the job may not be what you expected. You were promised one thing, but it turned into something else.
One thing that you should do about backstabbing is always hold your temper or it will be another reason for firing you. You have to get to the root of what is causing your unhappiness about where you are and what you’re currently doing.
The easiest way is to ask “Why?” five times.
“Oh, I’m not happy.” Well, why? “Because I got passed for a promotion.” Why was that? “Because they didn’t value the project I was working on.” Why not? “Because management changed and they changed the objectives.” Well, why was that? You really sort of drill down to the root cause and find out what the problem really is.
Once you decide that you need a change - that’s where the real fun begins. How to go about finding a new job or change careers completely.
There’s another way of looking at it:

Following our instincts and using our intuition can be one of the most valuable of tools for self improvement and success.
Everyone has hunches, ideas, insights or flashes of inspiration that we can’t explain and have no idea where they come from. We may be stuck or bogged down with something that we just can’t work out how to deal with. We may have weighed up all the facts and still don’t know what to do.
It’s very common to for us to get an idea from nowhere that may even fly in the face of the facts as we see them or have analysed them. This can happens when we least expect it, often when we are relaxing, or when our minds are otherwise occupied. As a result we often ignore these insights and ideas that could well have supplied the exact solution we needed.
These flashes of inspiration come from our subconscious minds, and if we let them, they can provide answers to most of the questions and problems we struggle with. The latest research has concluded that the subconscious minds stores and has access to everything we have seen, heard and come across in our entire lives, 24 hours a day. A large proportion of this information has never even registered in our conscious minds, which usually only absorbs those things that we actively pay attention to. It is thought that our insights come from the application of this life experience to the current events we are faced with.
There are techniques that can be learned from brain researchers and brain enhancement experts to help us to harness the incredible powers of our subconscious minds. Imagine what we could achieve with greatly increased mental capabilities!
Just being aware of the incredible capabilities of our subconscious minds can help our self improvement – if we decide to pay attention to our hunches and intuition and act on them.

In self improvement, we talk a lot about self esteem, the ability to stay calm, composed and confident when facing tough challenges. Basically, self esteem is the pillars that support your self improvement and development. So, if you view self improvement as a table, self esteem is the table’s legs. They got to be strong to support the table.
If we have a low self esteem, our confidence will tumble and we won’t be able to face daily challenges. Our self esteem is like a dash board, and hence a dart pin can land on it any time without a warning. If we’ve low self esteem, a small dart pin can just destroy our entire self confidence. That’s why building a strong self esteem is critical to your self development.
Following are some tips you may find useful in helping you to harness your self esteem.
1. Learn to interact with positive people. Do not shy away from people, learn how to socialize and interact with people. Overcome your shyness, we only live once in this world, so there is nothing to be ashamed of. The more you socialize and interact with people around you, the more comfortable you will become, and your self esteem will build up slowly.
2. Avoid negative work environment. Stay away from a work environment that promotes unhealthy competition, a dog-eats-dog and back-stabbing work culture where everybody is fighting just to get ahead. This is where non-appreciative people usually thrive. Your self esteem will be destroyed when no one appreciate your efforts and contributions. If you feel that the company you’re working right now has such environment, look for a new job and get out from there as soon as you can.
3. Acknowledge your past mistakes and learn from the experiences. It’s okay to cry when we experience pain. But don’t let pain transform itself into FEAR. There is a time to cry from your misfortune and there is a time to recover. Do not dwell on your problems, learn from it, shake it off and move on. If you dwell on a problem for too long, it might grab you by the tail, swing you around and totally destroy your self esteem. Don’t let that happens to you. Treat each failure and mistake as a lesson.
4. Avoid negative view and be optimistic. Always try to see the positive part of any problem first. Wish for the best things in life and believe that every challenge or problem you experience is for the benefit of you to improve. Don’t wrap yourself up with all the negativities of the world. In building self esteem, we must learn how to make the best out of worst situations.
5. Think positively. Always think about the good qualities and abilities in you. Focus on your strengths instead of weaknesses. Everything starts from your mind, if you think you can then you can and vice versa. Make positive thinking becomes your second habit and your self esteem will build up in no time.
6. Do not worry about the future or things that haven’t occurred. Just strive to do your best and do the right things today and tomorrow will take care of itself.
7. If you have a problem, do not avoid or pretend that it doesn’t exist. Face your problem and deal with it. Get help from family members or closed friends if necessary. Share with them openly about the problem you’re facing and ask for help. You will be amazed that people are generally willing to help, sometimes all you need to do is just ASK. Families and friends can help boost your self esteem and motivate you to face your problem.
When we develop self esteem, we take control of our life mission, values and discipline. Self esteem brings about self improvement and self development, positive attitude, and self determination.
